A new fly (for Essex)

19 Nov 2018

Our Natural Environment Manager Neil Harvey recently recorded a new species of fly for Essex on Essex County Council land managed for invertebrates in compensation for the impact of the construction of Roscommon Way, on Canvey Island.  This is the first fully documented record of the nationally rare picture-winged fly Campiglossa producta for the county.  The fly, with a body length of around 3mm, has only been recorded a few times recently in southeast England, with a cluster of sites on the Dorset coast. The larvae develop in the developing seeds of a variety of daisy-like flowers.
