Martin Ivatt


Martin is a Principal Urban Designer and Recognised Practitioner of the Urban Design Group, with over 11 years’ experience in urban design. Prior to joining Place Services, Martin assisted in the production of urban design and public realm schemes and studies across London and the South-East, working with architects and planners to develop proposals for a number of key sites within both rural and urban contexts. In his role at Place Services, Martin currently provides design advice to numerous local planning authorities across Essex and the wider London and South-East region. He is predominantly involved in the review of schemes ranging from pre application through to reserved matters referred by Development Management teams, and is highly involved in working with authorities to produce Design Guidance, Design Briefs and assisting with master planning of assets.

Martin was one of the key authors of the revised 2018 Essex Design Guide (EDG), a nationally and internationally renowned design guidance document which was launched in February 2018. Martin also regularly undertake a series of Member and Officer training in urban design, including introduction to urban design for decision makers, urban design in conservation areas, design coding for development, how to use urban design through the planning process and walking tours of developments, often accompanied with design surgeries with planners and Members to review schemes and constructively suggest improvements. Martin has represented Place Services at numerous national conferences on subjects such as Growth in the wider South-East and the role of design in the planning system.
