Place Services carried out a programme of archaeological building recording of Trestle Viaduct at Wickham Bishops, Maldon, Essex. The viaduct is a Scheduled Monument. The structure is in a poor state of repair. The archaeological building recording was designed to document this asset in detail.
The recording project ensures that Essex County Council, responsible for the preservation of the viaduct, possesses a comprehensive and analytical record of the structure in its current state. Recognised as a heritage asset of high significance, the viaduct was surveyed at the most detailed level, Level 4, as defined by Historic England. The survey and analysis encompassed the structure, architectural details, and archaeological evidence. The findings from this investigation provide a thorough understanding of the viaduct's significance, derived from its development, historical use within a regional railway context, construction techniques, and architectural importance. This information will support Essex County Council in the design and management of any future conservation and repair schemes.
