English Heritage has commissioned Place Services to run a pilot study exploring ways in which volunteers can carry out risk assessments on Grade II Listed Buildings.

The survey, taking place in 'Constable Country', along the Stour Valley between Essex and Suffolk, is being undertaken in collaboration with the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale AONB project, local authority partners, and volunteers from communities in the valley.

A website was created, which allows volunteers to select buildings they want to survey, and to add their results; volunteer training has taken place; a 'tool kit' has been produced, and initial findings reported back to English Heritage. It is intended that lessons learned from the study will be used to inform regional or national approaches to this kind of survey.
